Yes, this is real. Two gigantic robots will battle each other Gundam-style for our amusement — and it will be streamed.
On Oct. 17, the colossal robots Eagle Prime and Kuratas will meet in a violent duel.
At least, that’s when you can watch a stream of their battle that will last for days. The robots, which are piloted by humans, will attempt to topple each other.
This match has been two years in the making. In 2015, Megabots Inc. — a group of U.S. engineers that endeavor to build massive “fighting robots of science fiction, video games and movies” — challenged the Japanese robot Kuratas, built by Suidobashi Heavy Industries. Read more…

Hurricane Ophelia reaches Category 2 intensity, to make rare run at Ireland and UK
October 12, 2017The 2017 hurricane season appears likely to make its mark on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, as Category 2 Hurricane Ophelia takes aim at … wait for it … Ireland and the UK.
The storm, which had sustained winds of 100 miles per hour as of 5 p.m. ET, is a rarity for being so intense, and so far to the north and east in the Atlantic. In fact, it’s the most intense hurricane ever observed so far east during the month of October, according to meteorologist Philip Klotzbach of Colorado State University.

Donald Trump didn't want to share a name with Donnie Jr. in case he was a 'loser'
October 12, 2017Oh, to be the spawn of Donald Trump. His son Donnie Jr. has been rightly slammed for meeting with Russian lawyers, posing with a dead elephant, and just generally being the worst.
Well, his mother, Ivana Trump, dropped some clues as to why Lil’ Don is such a turd with her new book, Raising Trump.
In it, she recounts this heartwarming family memory:
Harsh! And then, on Good Morning America, Ivana recalled Donald Trump Sr. not wanting to give his son his name.
“I said, ‘Why not?’” Ivana said. “He said, ‘How about if he’s a loser?'” Read more…

Tesla recalls 11,000 Model Xs because the second-row seats have a problem
October 12, 2017Tesla instituted another Model X recall Thursday, this time for a safety issue with its second-row seats, which could move forward during a crash.
The voluntary recall covers some 11,000 cars built between Oct. 28, 2016 and Aug. 16, 2017, a Tesla spokesperson said.
During testing, Tesla found that cables in the seats might not be in the right place, so the back left-side seats could move forward during a crash.
No incidents have been reported by customers, but the company is offering free repairs either through its mobile service or at a service center. The company’s mobile service means a service van comes to you. Read more…

Fatty avocados are the perfect fruit: a healthy fat, ready to adorn your salad/toast/insert food here with a dose of creamy, green goodness.
Yet the marketing powers that be want you to consider an alternative: The low-fat avocado.
Per Fresh Plaza, Spanish produce brand Isla Bonita just launched Aguacate Light, with about 30 percent less fat than the fruit’s more popular varieties — the Haas avocado, for instance.
Ramón Rey of Isla Bonita tells Fresh Plaza that their avocado “has a mild flavor and a juicier and lighter pulp” than avocados traditionally found in the supermarket. Read more…

Raging California wildfires burned 80 cell towers, hampering evacuation alerts
October 12, 2017Surging California wildfires spread so quickly into some neighborhoods that emergency texts, phone calls, and tweets could not be sent to alert people of the approaching flames.
These unprecedented fires, fueled by dry vegetation after a wet winter and scorchingly hot summer and unrelenting “Diablo” winds, have so far killed 26, left nearly 300 missing, and are barely contained. “The winds are picking up again,” a Napa resident (who wished to be unnamed) told Mashable Wednesday night. “It’s apocalyptic.”
Local governments have emergency response alert systems set up to inform residents of evacuations, notably via text message, but the fires outpaced many of these systems. Read more…

Look, telling time on an analog clock is hard. We’re all digital now, and the skill of reading clocks is one that we’re totally fine letting die. Still, there’s something quaint about saying, “it’s half past two” that precise digital clocks aren’t built for.
This text-based clock is a weird, cool middle ground between analog and digital. The words on the face light up to form a sentence that tells you the time in verbal terms. The bright LED lights spell out the approximate time so it feels much more human than a digital display. Read more…
