Brexit a ‘disadvantage’ for UK: Hillary Clinton

    October 15, 2017

LONDON: Hillary Clinton said Brexit would put Britain at a “very big disadvantage” and force companies to move resources to continental Europe, in an interview aired Sunday.

Britain leaving the European Union could cause serious disruption for the country as it tries to reorder its trading relationships, she told BBC television.

“I think it would be a very big disadvantage to Britain,” said Clinton, the Democratic Party candidate who lost to Donald Trump in last year’s US presidential election.

“No deal meaning no preferential trade deals, which means products in Britain would not have the kind of easy access to the European market that you’ve had under EU membership.

EU says ‘ball entirely in UK court’ in Brexit talks

“It could very well mean that there would be more pressure on businesses in Britain, if not to leave completely, at least (to) also have sites and employment elsewhere in Europe.

“The disruption for Britain could be quite serious,” the former US secretary of state said.

As Britain’s divorce discussions with the EU stumble on, London now admits it is actively preparing to leave in March 2019 without agreeing a trade deal, which would mean operating on World Trade Organization tariff rules.

Clinton suggested that commercial ties with the EU could not be replaced by a new trading relationship with the United States under Trump.

“You’re making a trade deal with someone who says he doesn’t believe in trade,” she said.

EU negotiator Michel Barnier said Thursday that Britain and the bloc are stuck in a “disturbing deadlock” over London’s financial settlement, although a breakthrough remains possible over the next two months.

He told reporters in Brussels that he could not recommend to EU leaders at a summit next week that negotiations move on from divorce issues to talks on a post-Brexit trade deal.

    October 15, 2017

Rangers seized many weapons in two separate raids in Karachi on Sunday.

After being tipped off about the presence of miscreants belonging to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-London in Nazimabad, the paramilitary force raided a hideout there and found several weapons.

A Rangers spokesperson said the weapons included 12 30-bore pistols, five grenades with detonators and 218 rounds of ammunition.

Separately, Rangers found weapons hidden inside a house’s water storage tank and took a suspect into custody during an operation in Memon Goth.

The spokesperson said the paramilitary force conducted a raid at a house in Darsanu Chinnu area following a tip-off and found a huge quantity of arms and ammunition hidden in a water storage tank.

Conte admits Chelsea are in a ‘big problem’

    October 15, 2017

LONDON: Antonio Conte admits Chelsea are facing a “big problem” after the Premier League champions crashed to a shock 2-1 defeat at lowly Crystal Palace.

The loss left Conte’s side nine points adrift of leaders Manchester City and the pain was compounded by a hamstring injury to Victor Moses that will rule the wing-back out of Wednesday’s Champions League meeting with Roma.

Moses joins Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante on the sidelines, but Blues boss Conte is hopeful striker Alvaro Morata will be fit to return after sitting out the visit to Palace with a hamstring problem.

Chelsea have lost their last two league games after the Palace setback followed a damaging defeat to Manchester City before the international break.

“I think, in this moment, for us it’s a very difficult moment,” he said. “When you start a game without Morata and without Kante, it’s not simple. Above all if, during the game, another important player in your team has an injury too like Victor Moses. I hope to have him back very soon because this moment is very difficult for us. To lose three or four players, it’s a big problem for us.”

Questions have been raised about the depth of Conte’s squad this season and the Italian added: “I think the situation is very clear and everyone can see that situation. I repeat: my job is to be focused on my work with my players, and to try and do our best. You know I don’t like to lose. Imagine when you lose two games in a row. For sure, my soul today is bad.”

Palace claimed their first league goals of the season after losing their first seven matches, with Cesar Azpilicueta’s own-goal setting them on their way and Wilfried Zaha tying up the win on the stroke of half-time after Tiemoue Bakayoko had equalised.

Roy Hodgson’s side remain at the foot of the table and while the Palace manager was relieved to get off the mark, he rejected the suggestion the club’s season had finally taken off.

“In terms of the season starting, I don’t embrace that idea. I don’t subscribe to it. A championship is 38 matches. Each is its own particular story,” he said. “Sometimes it’s a good story — we’d like to read that chapter again — but next Saturday is another story.”

    October 15, 2017

    It’s great TV.

For close to eight minutes, Nanjiani pokes at online trolls, Islamophobes, critics of “race-mixing,” and ignorant racists, the last of which is really a catch-all that covers all the others. It’s one of the funnier SNL opening monologues in recent memory, and hey, it also has some worthwhile things to say, too. Read more…

Here's how easy it is for anyone to use Facebook like Russian actors did

    October 15, 2017

It only takes about five minutes to buy a Facebook ad with a link to a fake anti-Muslim story and aim it at residents of a Michigan electoral battleground county whom the social network’s algorithms perceive to be “very conservative.”

This capability is at the heart of an ongoing controversy around revelations that a Russian troll farm gamed Facebook’s ad targeting apparatus with exactly these sorts of purchases. Facebook has admitted that it sold 3,000 ads to entities aligned with the Russian government’s campaign to influence the presidential election. The Kremlin-linked actors reportedly used Facebook’s tools to target ads around electoral geography, feelings toward Muslims, and racial divisions, among other political pressure points.  Read more…
