William and Kate expect baby in April: Kensington Palace

    October 17, 2017

LONDON: Prince William and his wife Kate are expecting their third baby in April, Kensington Palace announced on Tuesday.

The couple — the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge — were “delighted” to confirm the month their child is due to be born, a brief statement said.

Kensington Palace announced Kate’s pregnancy last month, after she was forced to cancel an engagement because of extreme morning sickness.

The duchess has continued to suffer from the condition, but made a surprise appearance at a royal engagement on Monday.

Princess Kate is pregnant with third child

She is due to visit Norway and Sweden with William on an official visit early in 2018.

The couple already have two children: Prince George, born in 2013, and Princess Charlotte, aged two.

Both were born at St Mary’s Hospital in London, where William was delivered in 1982.

Karachi stabbings: Police think they’ve got the wrong guy

    October 17, 2017

The Karachi police said on Tuesday that Mohammad Waseem, the ‘prime suspect’ in the Karachi stabbing cases who was arrested in Mandi Bahauddin a couple of days ago, might not be the culprit, Express News reported.

The police have been unable to find any evidence of Waseem’s presence in Karachi when the stabbings took place.

The residents of Karachi had breathed a sigh of relief after reports of Waseem’s arrest surfaced over the weekend.

However, that respite has turned out to be short-lived.

Briefing senators at a meeting chaired by Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan’s Nasreen Jalil on Tuesday, DIG East Sultan Khawaja said the police could not find enough evidence against the suspect.

Rs0.5 million bounty announced on ‘psychopath’ who stabs women in Karachi’s Gulistan-e-Jauhar

There is no evidence that he was present in Karachi during the time the 13 knife attacks took place.

Additional IG Karachi Mushtaq Mehar also briefed the participants of the Senate’s functional committee meeting.

Senator Farhatullah Babur, the Sindh chief secretary, the home secretary and officials of Rangers and police were among those present there.

Khawaja said all 16 cell phone SIMs being used Waseem had been examined and none of them was used to make phone calls to and from Karachi.

The DIG hinted that the suspect might be released soon over lack of evidence.

The official said the law enforcement agencies had rounded up 38 suspects in connection with the stabbings, checked the data of 200 cell phones, traced 15,000 phone calls and collected records from three psychiatric hospitals in Karachi.

He added that the CCTV surveillance system in Karachi had failed to be of any assistance.

AIG Mehar said former activists of proscribed militant outfits were also taken into custody during the investigation. He added that around 30 psychiatric patients were interrogated and 40 small-time criminals also apprehended.

Mehar said Karachi was not new to serial attacks and pointed out that 75 army and police personnel were martyred in the city in 2016.

He added that the banned Ansarul Sharia was involved in 25 of these cases

Macau plans ‘simulated attacks’ in security ramp-up after Vegas shooting

    October 17, 2017

HONG KONG:  Authorities in the Chinese territory of Macau have ramped up security measures following the deadly Las Vegas shooting this month and unveiled plans for a series of mock attacks and crisis training to safeguard the world’s largest gambling hub.

The new recommendations were laid out in a government statement following a meeting on Monday between Macau’s gaming regulator, the Judiciary Police and representatives from the six licensed casino operators which include Wynn Macau and Sands China.

Second storm hits Hong Kong and Macau amid typhoon recovery

The former Portuguese colony of Macau had seen heady gang violence and bombings until China took control in 1999. Since the handover, booming casino revenues have propelled the tiny enclave of 600,000 people to one of the world’s richest cities.

Macau had a relatively lower risk of attack, said Chau Wai Kuong, director of Macau’s Judiciary Police, although he cautioned the special administrative region must be vigilant.

The Las Vegas attack on October 1 was the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history after gunman Stephen Paddock opened fire from his hotel room on more than 20,000 concertgoers at an outdoor venue. A total of 59 people were killed, including Paddock who shot himself.

“A simulation of attacks should be conducted in the short term … so that the frontline workers of casinos are more skilled in handling emergency incidents,” the statement from Macau authorities said.

Other measures included setting up a special action team with protective equipment and additional physical training for frontline staff to help reduce any casualties in any potential situations before police arrive.

Casinos will also install metal detectors at all entrances and place a ban on luggage on the casino floors. Operators also need to train their employees to identify suspicious people and increase overall security procedures.

Paulo Martins Chan, the head of Macau’s gaming regulator, said all operators had purchased permanent metal detectors which would help to reduce and dispel criminals.

Macau’s casino operators Wynn Macau, Sands China, MGM China , Melco Crown, SJM and Galaxy Entertainment had already been on alert following an attack in June at a Manila casino where a lone gunman started a blaze that killed more than 30 people.

Before Pakistan tour, Sri Lanka eases ban on Gunathilaka

    October 17, 2017

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s cricket board halved a six-match ban on Tuesday imposed on all-rounder Danushka Gunathilaka for misconduct, amid speculation several players may drop out of the third and final T20I which is scheduled to be played in Lahore, Pakstan.

The board’s decision clears Gunathilaka to play in the three-match series starting October 26 in the UAE, though the final squad of 15 will not be announced until Friday.

Sri Lanka Cricket confirm Pakistan tour

The final will be played on October 29 in Lahore, where the Sri Lankan team bus came under attack from militants in 2009.

No top international cricket side has returned to Pakistan since then for a full tour.

“The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket decided to revise the suspension imposed on Gunathilaka upon consideration of the appeal,” Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement.

Gunathilaka was suspended for unspecified “misconduct” during Sri Lanka’s humiliating home series thrashing by India in which the islanders lost 9-0. His fine — 20 percent of his annual match fees — remains unchanged.

Gunathilaka was dropped from the squad for the ongoing five-match ODI series against Pakistan in the UAE.

His reprieve comes as players expressed private concerns about the board’s decision to play the last T20I in Lahore.

Memories of 2009 remain: ‘Sri Lanka players reluctant to visit Pakistan’

A source close to the board said skipper Upul Tharanga and Lasith Malinga were likely to pull out of the entire series due to security concerns about the final.

However, the board announced on Monday that it would go ahead with the tour and “confirmed its commitment to play the third T20” in Lahore after assessments by government agencies, independent security experts and the International Cricket Council.

Sri Lanka Cricket chief Thilanga Sumathipala would accompany the team, the board added. In August he called for an end to Pakistan’s isolation from world cricket.

Sri Lanka should come to Lahore, says Sarfraz Ahmed

Pakistan shifted their “home” matches to the UAE after the 2009 militant attack. Since then, only low-ranked Zimbabwe has toured Pakistan, playing five limited-overs games in Lahore in 2015.

But a World XI squad, comprising 13 players from seven top cricket-playing nations, played in Lahore last month, with Pakistan hoping the visit would help end years of international isolation.

Trump’s fortune slides by $600 mn on Forbes wealth list

    October 17, 2017

NEW YORK: America’s richest may be getting richer but President Donald Trump’s fortune has slid by $600 million to $3.1 billion, according to a list of 400 billionaires released by Forbes magazine on Tuesday.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates topped the list for a 24th consecutive year on a net worth of $89 billion with Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, worth $81.5 billion, number two.

But Trump, the first US president to come solely from the private sector, is ranked 248 — sharing the spot with 27-year-old Snap co-founder and CEO Evan Spiegel, the youngest person on the list.

Forbes attributed Trump’s decline to a weakening New York retail and office real estate market, and new information about his assets. The Manhattan tycoon ranked 156 in 2016, the year he was elected to the White House.

Forbes said those on its 36th annual list of the 400 wealthiest Americans have a record-breaking, combined total net worth of $2.7 trillion, up from $2.4 trillion in 2016. Entrance to the exclusive club cost a record breaking $2 billion.

There were 22 newcomers, including Netflix cofounder and CEO Reed Hastings. Twenty-six people dropped off from last year, including US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.

There were only 50 women on the list. Alice Walton, the daughter of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton, was the highest ranked at 13. Unlike her brothers, she has focused on curating art rather than working for Wal-Mart.

The biggest gainer in dollar terms was Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, chalking up a $15.5 billion increase in net worth to retain his number four ranking at $71 billion.

2017 Asia Cup: Pakistan face Group B toppers Malaysia

    October 17, 2017

KARACHI: Pakistan hockey team, after qualifying for the second round, will face Malaysia in their first match of the final-four round of the 2017 Asia Cup at Dhaka on Wednesday.

The Greenshirts entered round two by finishing on the second position courtesy a 7-0 against Bangladesh, a 2-2 draw against Japan and 3-1 defeat to India in Group A.

Malaysia and South Korea finished on the first and second position respectively to make it into the final-four from Group B.

The results of the ground rounds pit Pakistan against Malaysia in their first match of second round, while India face South Korea in the other match.

Pakistan thrashed 3-1 by India in Asia Cup

Pakistan captain Muhammad Irfan is optimistic to rectify the mistakes which led to a draw and a defeat in the group matches.

“We are working on our weak areas and are focusing more on finishing our moves successfully, which requires more coordination in the field,” he said. “We missed a lot of chance in all three matches which is a weakness we have been working on for the last couple of days. We are optimistic to do well in our next match.”

Meanwhile, head coach Farhat Khan said the players are in a good form and they just need to get their act together in the midfield to produce better results. “The other teams are taking advantage of this, they judge our move and defend their goal. We have to create and finish moves which the other team don’t expect,” he said.

Farhat added that defenders need to reset their focus on providing better balls to the midfield.

“The defenders are doing fine,” he said. “They just need to keep focus a bit more on the ball. You can’t take your eye off the ball even for a second; otherwise, you lose the move. We’ll be putting to test all the practice in the match against Malaysia.”

Shehbaz meets Maryam, says clash between institutions not good for country

    October 17, 2017

Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz emphasised on better ties among all national institutions, saying the current atmosphere of confrontation between institutions “is not in the best interest of the country”.

“The present atmosphere of confrontation between institutions is not in the best interest of the country”, CM Shehbaz said during a meeting with Maryam Nawaz in Lahore on Tuesday.

The Punjab chief minister comments came in the backdrop of a simmering controversy stirred by a recent spat between Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal and chief military spokesperson Major General Asif Ghafoor.

Last week Maj-Gen Ghafoor said in a TV interview that “if the economy is not bad, it isn’t good either”. Ahsan hit back immediately advising the military spokesperson to “refrain from commenting on the economy… [because] irresponsible statements could damage Pakistan’s image globally”.

‘Bite the dust’: No disagreements within Sharif family, says Maryam Nawaz

“Every institution should work within its parametres for a sustainable political environment which is beneficial for the country’s progress and prosperity,” Shehbaz said.

Maryam, the daughter of deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif, called on the Punjab chief minister and his son Hamza Nawaz after almost six months of hiatus.

They exchanged views on the key political and party matters.

CM Shehbaz also inquired after Kulsoom Nawaz’s health condition who is under treatment in London and prayed for her early recovery.

Kulsoom, the winning candidate of NA-120 by-poll and former first lady, began her first round of chemotherapy last week in the British capital.
