The Shape of Water was the best film of 2017, according to the Academy Awards.

The Best Picture prize capped off what was a great night for the film. Earlier that night, The Shape of Water had taken home Best Director (for Guillermo del Toro), Best Score (for Alexandre Desplat), and Best Production Design (for Paul D. Austerberry, Shane Vieau, and Jeffrey A. Melvin).
The film had additionally been nominated for nine other awards, including Best Original Screenplay, Best Lead Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. It was the most-nominated picture of the 2018 Oscars race. Read more…

Greta Gerwig didn’t take home the Oscar for Best Director during Sunday night’s Academy Awards. That honor went to Guillermo Del Toro for The Shape of Water.
But before opening the envelope, presenter Emma Stone gave Gerwig a shoutout for her role as the sole woman nominated in the directing category.

“These four men and Greta Gerwig created their own masterpieces this year,” she said.
While some praised the line, as many have noted on Twitter, Stone’s choice to draw a line between the category’s male nominees and Gerwig ignores that two of the men nominated – Jordan Peele and Del Toro – are also people of color. Read more…

Mark Bridges won an Oscar for Costume Design at the Academy Awards Sunday night and gave a speech that came in at just 36 seconds, earning him a jet ski and a free stay at the Days Inn in beautiful Lake Havasu in Arizona.

In his opening monologue, Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel tempted nominees to keep their speeches short by promising to give them a jet ski, which legendary actress Helen Mirren showed off in perfect fashion.
