As someone out there once said, “All I need in this life of sin is me and my lip balm.”
That someone may have been me, it’s true, but nonetheless it should clearly be a universal mantra. Our lips are very important (they might be the most used part of our face?), so it’s only right to slather them with luxurious balms to keep dry skin at bay. But with what?
Sticking to one type of chapstick is a challenge for me because of my uncanny ability to lose a tube in less than 24 hours, and because of my curiosity. As much as I try to fight it, I find myself with chapped lips pretty often and that, dear reader, is something I have decided will only change if I find one ointment to rule them all. Join me on my quest to keep moisturized by any means necessary. Read more…

Parkland students call out senator for law protecting dogs instead of gun control
March 15, 2018Parkland students are criticizing lawmakers’ quick action to protect animals on flights while ignoring pleas for stricter gun control laws.
Senator John Kennedy, a Republican from Louisiana, introduced a new bill on Thursday called the Welfare of Our Furry Friends Act (cleverly shortened to WOOFF) that would forbid airlines from putting animals in overhead bins.
He announced his plans for this bill only hours after an 11-month-old puppy died on a United Airlines flight after a flight attendant forced its owner to put it in an overhead bin, and on the same day as the national student walkout in remembrance of the victims who died in the Parkland school shooting a month ago. Seven million women (and men) love theSkimm.
With its daily newsletters designed to keep you in the loop on the latest news and pop culture, theSkimm has developed a loyal following, and even recruits fans called “Skimm’bassadors” to help spread the word.
That word-of-mouth hype is helping, and the startup has seen enough growth to warrant more funding. TheSkimm is announcing a $12 million round led by GV (Google Ventures), with participation from Spanx founder Sara Blakely as well as existing investors like RRE Ventures and Homebrew.
Co-founded in 2012 in New York by former TV news producers Carly Zakin and Danielle Weisberg, the company has expanded beyond its newsletters targeting millennial women and offers subscription products, too. TheSkimm’s app includes a calendar of upcoming news and televised events. It also has podcasts and an e-commerce business.
Revenue is said to have more than doubled year over year since 2016, partly due to the subscriptions, but also due to native advertising and affiliate licensing. The staff has doubled, as well, and recently moved into a new headquarters.
The latest funding, which adds to the more than $16 million already raised, will be used to add more subscription services and also further expand into video and podcasting.
TheSkimm also has plans for data analysis.

Stephen Hawking's fitting final role: How he literally became the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
March 15, 2018One thing has gone unmentioned in all the eulogies for Professor Stephen Hawking, who died this week at the age of 76. Sure, he was a physics legend whose calculations forever changed how we view time, the universe and everything.
But he was also a hoopy frood who really knew where his towel was.
In other words, Hawking was a big fan of Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy — the hilarious five-book “trilogy” and movie that began life as a BBC radio show. And there could be no more fitting tribute to his intergalactic greatness than for Hawking to become the voice of the all-knowing Guide itself. Read more…
