Since news of Aretha Franklin’s death broke on Thursday morning, the internet has been flooded with memories, condolences, and tributes to the Queen of Soul.
Former president Barack Obama — who, like many of us, has been moved to tears by Franklin’s music and spirit — shared an emotional note about her passing.
“[E]very time she sang, we were all graced with a glimpse of the divine,” Obama wrote.
“Through her compositions and unmatched musicianship, Aretha helped define the American experience. In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every shade—our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect. She helped us feel more connected to each other, more hopeful, more human. And sometimes she helped us just forget about everything else and dance,” he continued. Read more…

Netflix isn't trying to make you love romcoms again – because it knows you never stopped
August 16, 2018It’s Summer Lovin’ Week here at Mashable, which means things are getting steamy. In honor of the release of Crazy Rich Asians, we’re celebrating onscreen love and romance, looking at everything from our favorite fictional couples to how Hollywood’s love stories are evolving. Think of it as our love letter to, well, love.
There was a weekend, back in June, when my Twitter feed suddenly lit up with praise for some buzzy new movie. Which wouldn’t be that odd the thick of the summer movie season – except that the film in question wasn’t just another nine-figure blockbuster sequel du jour.
Instead, it was Set It Up, a low-key charmer starring two attractive young people that most viewers will only kind of recognize (Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell). Read more…

Newspapers banded together to defend the press and Lil' Trump threw a tantrum
August 16, 2018President Trump is having A Day™️.
On Thursday, more than 100 newspapers from across the country joined together to condemn the president’s aggressive attacks on the media.
Instead of ignoring the editorials or responding to them constructively, President Trump did what he does best: plunged himself into chaos.
Between the president’s attacks on CNN reporter Jim Acosta and the his insistence on calling the media the “enemy of the people,” it’s been a particularly brutal summer for the free press. Led by The Boston Globe, members of the mainstream media decided to publish dozens of editorials defending their work and their constitutional right to exist. Read more…

MoviePass has made yet another update in the ongoing turbulent saga of its existence: From now on – or maybe until tomorrow, who knows! – subscribers will be able to purchase tickets only to six possible movies, which change on a daily basis. Not only does this restrict users to half a dozen titles, but MoviePass will also limit available showtimes (except for e-ticketing).
While there is a touch of excitement to this plan and to the rotation of movies, it’s of no use to users who like to plan their movie-viewing at least 24 hours in advance. Want to see Crazy Rich Asians? Cool, not yet though! Want to see BlacKkKlansman? Neat, but go today before it’s gone! Read more…
