Number of women behind the camera in Hollywood hasn't changed in 20 years, study finds
January 11, 2018In 2017, the top three films of the 2017 box office all starred women. But behind the camera, things aren’t looking as promising.
Sure, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Wonder Woman and Beauty and the Beast made it seem like female representation in Hollywood was on the up, but women comprised just 18 percent of all directors, writers, producers, executive producers, editors, and cinematographers working on the top films of 2017, according to a new study.
This is a measly 1 percent higher than 2016, but is “virtually unchanged” from 1998. That’s two decades ago, and nothing has changed? Read more…

Unlike Apple, this phone maker put a fingerprint sensor under its touchscreen
January 11, 2018With the move to edge-to-edge screens and narrower bezels, there’s just no room to put a fingerprint sensor on the front of a phone anymore. Phone makers have moved them to the side or back, or removed them entirely.

Vivo’s been working on putting a fingerprint sensor underneath the screen for the last couple of years, and now it’s finally made one that’s ready for production.
The company had already announced last year it had developed the “in-display fingerprint scanning” technology for a prototype phone. That version used an ultra-sonic sensor and was created with support from Qualcomm. Read more…

Snakes are relatively common in Australia, but perhaps less so coiled up on people’s cars.
A driver got quite the surprise when a venomous red-bellied black snake made an appearance on the side of his car on Wednesday.
According to ABC News, driver Ted Ogier was driving back from the New South Wales town of Eden for work, when suddenly a snake slithered from under the bonnet to curl around the driver’s side mirror. Oh, and it wanted in.
“It was sort of tapping on the window a couple of times, because it obviously wanted to get in,” Ogier told the news outlet. Read more…

January 11, 2018The culprit behind the creepy spyware Fruitfly was nabbed finally — after 13 years.
A 28-year-old Ohio man was accused Wednesday of running the malware attack on thousands of computers, according to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).
Phillip Durachinsky was indicted on 16 counts for wiretapping, identity theft, producing child pornography, and other computer fraud violations.
Fruitfly — as the malware was named — was installed on thousands of computers from 2003 through January 2017. Durachinsky had access to personal computers along with devices at companies, schools, a police department, and a subsidiary of the U.S. Department of Energy.
