Vice Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi will replace Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah as the Pakistan Navy chief.
“On the advice of Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, the President has approved the appointment of Vice Admiral Zafar Mahmood as the Chief of the Naval Staff,” read a Pakistan Navy statement.
“Admiral Zakaullah shall complete his tenure on October 6, and added that Vice Admiral Abbasi will stand promoted to the rank of Admiral from the date he assumes charge of the office of the naval chief.”

The appointment was made on a summary initiated by the ministry of defence in terms of Article 243(4)(c) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, it added.
Zafar Mahmood Abbasi joined the Navy in 1978, and received education at Pakistan Naval Academy. He received his initial training at the Britannia Royal Naval College in United Kingdom. He was commissioned in the force as Lieutenant in 1981 after graduating from the academy.
