Bioengineers recreated spider silk by fermenting E. Coli bacteria

A German biotechnology company, AMSilk, is using fermenting techniques on E. coli bacteria to replicate spider silk. This bioengineered raw silk material is at least 15 percent lighter than conventional silk and can be tougher than steel. 

“Biosteel” is already being produced at a large scale supplying companies across various industries. Companies such as the Adidas Group have used it to create premium innovation prototypes like 100 percent biodegradable sneakers. Read more…
