Accountability for all

October 26, 2017

LAHORE: It is both surprising and disappointing to know that despite the much frequently raised outcry by politicians for the absence of a concrete mechanism to hold state institutions’ officials accountable for any misconduct or discrepancies, the Jamaat-e-Islami, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf have rejected the bill drafted for the said purpose.

For reasons unknown, the three parties rejected the bill without suggesting any amendments to it at the most recent meeting over the matter, which was 14th in the count. As Senator Farhatullah Babar of the Pakistan Peoples Party addressed the officials as ‘public office holders’ in the legislation draft, accountability of all is necessary to uphold and carry forward democratic values in a transparent manner. Hence, it becomes more important to know the reasons behind the rejection of the National Accountability Commission Bill by the afore-mentioned parties. Accountability should not be limited to the government functionaries only.
