‘Jihad’ and its connotations

October 8, 2017

FAISALABAD: Political strategies in Pakistan greatly revolve around the blunders made by politicians, regardless of them being fixed or corrected.

As the necessary amendment has been made to rectify the error over the ‘Khatam-e-Nabuwwat’ clause of the Constitution, the opposition is in no mood to let the issue die. Apart from religious parties, religious-militant organisations too are playing the same card against the government. This blunder led to a furor from religious conservative groups in the country.

The recent statement by the interior minister that “only the state has the right to declare Jihad,” could also possibly lead to a negative outcome considering the connotations that are commonly attached to the term Jihad.

On the one hand, the state grapples with anti-state, radical and extremist elements, and on the other it is accused of providing support to the same. Considering the context that is given to the term Jihad, the minister should have been more careful with his use of words. The term has been perceived in relation to the militant elements and hence, is alarming to the West.
