Court fiasco result of ‘lack of coordination’: DG ISPR

October 5, 2017

The mismanagement caused outside the accountability court in Islamabad earlier this week was a result of “incoordination” between law enforcement agencies and civil administration and not a “clash between institutions”, director Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has said.

“It was an incident of local incoordination [but] received a tremendous hype,” Major General Asif Ghafoor told reporters on Thursday. “It was not an incident of a clash between the institutions. We need to improve this coordination and encourage a soldier rendering his duties.”

The paramilitary force was deployed at the Federal Judicial Complex on Monday, where the accountability court is located, stopping media and senior politicians, including some federal cabinet members, from entering the premises.

Following the mishap, Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal threatened to resign, asking whose orders the Rangers was following, and promised an inquiry into and disciplinary action over the incident. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said that the controversial deployment of Rangers would be investigated and whosoever ordered deployment of paramilitary troops would be punished.

If Rangers found guilty, action will be taken against them: PM

“We need to understand that [when] a soldier, whether belonging to military or police, is deployed on his designated place of duty and has been ordered to provide security, Ghafoor said.  “It is possible that someone who did not have a card was a relevant person, but Rangers personnel do not know. Even if the army chief does not have a card, he is informed by personnel that he is not allowed [to pass].”

“We need to appreciate the personnel for their duty,” he added.

The incoordination, he added, was dealt with in 10 to 15 minutes. “Then the rest of the [PML-N] leadership went inside [the court],” he said.

The director general also discussed several key issues, including relations with Afghanistan, India and the US, internal security and civil military relations.

Election bill controversy

On the removal of the clause relating to Khatm-e-Nabuwwat (finality of the prophethood) from the Election Bill, Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor said that the military, like every Pakistani, has never and will never compromise on the sanctity of the Prophet (PBUH).
